newportFILM EDU

Goal:

1300 students learn about climate issues in their own backyards.

Location:

Newport, Rhode Island

Key Highlights:

  • Fostered the educational arm of newportFILM by hosting a screening for local schools.
  • Panelists connected global reef bleaching to Newport’s coastline and recent flooding.
  • Ignited discussion with students around their coastal community in Rhode Island.

1,300 Aquidneck Island public and private school students from grades 5-12 attended newportFILM EDU’s screening of Chasing Coral. The film resonated strongly with the oceanside community of Newport, whose coastline has experienced increased flooding due to rapidly rising sea levels. After the screening, Dr. Graham Forester, from the University of Rhode Island’s School of Environment and Life Sciences, chatted with students about the issues addressed in the film and linked them to the effects Newport is feeling from climate change.
